What is wrong with us?
On Sunday, Dylan and I decided to go to the movies. Since he had a stressful week with all of his knee fiascos, I told him that he could pick the movie and didn’t even revoke my offer when he chose a kung-fu movie. The movie turned out the be fairly good; I was able to follow the plot and it wasn’t too violent or gross. I cannot say the same about the previews, however. There were 4 previews total, and three of them were for horror movies: Grudge 2, The Return, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Beginning.
In all fairness, the Grudge 2 is just creepy. I particularly dislike the part where the person is leaning over a chemical tray in the darkroom and the figure in the photograph suddenly comes out of the tray and grabs him.It will certainly give me a moments pause the next time I am in the darkroom working. Seriously. Plus, the movie seems to have some kind of plot. It isn’t just gross without direction or reason. The Return kind of seemed to be along the same lines.
My real distress came from the final preview, the one for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel. From what I could tell the movie is brutal and bloody without a hell of a lot to back up such violence.Granted, I will never see this movie because I avoid scary flicks as a general rule, so I will never know if there is truly a plot to support the needless torture and killing that comprised the preview. But still, it made me wonder what is wrong with us as a society if watching other human beings suffer can be considered entertainment.
I am not saying horror movies are bad, but I feel that they should have something to offer other than violent images and human brutality.?
